Dungannon Swifts made history yesterday securing their first ever senior title, beating Ballymena United 3-1 in the BetMcLean League Cup final.
Sponsor Paul McLean of BetMcLean.com said ” We are delighted to sponsor the BetMcLean League Cup and we wholeheartedly congratulate Rodney McAree and his team on this historic win”
Dungannon’s epic win started with talisman and winger Ryan Mayse opening the scoring in the 11th minute to give the Swifts an early lead but the score was soon levelled by Ballymena’s Kyle Owens seven minutes later. Nearly forty minutes in, Mayse netted his second goal and the Swifts went into the second half 2-1 up and full of confidence.
Dungannon’s Conor Burke assisted by Mayse netted their third goal ten minutes into the second half to all but secure their first senior title. Ballymena had a lot of possession in the game but couldn’t seem to make it happen despite Dungannon’s captain Harper being sent off after an off-the-ball incident involving United defender Kofi Balmer in the 81st minute. Dungannon Swifts remained calm and composed which resulted in their first ever League Cup Final title.
