Last night Glentoran hosted Linfield at the Oval in the first of this season’s derbies live on Sky Sports.
The hosts nearly went ahead when John Herron had an overhead kick but unfortunately for him, it fell squarely into Roy Carroll’s arms. New Linfield signing, former Dundalk striker Michael O’Connor broke the deadlock 15 minutes into the game after Joel Cooper burst forward and lined the ball up for O’Connor to slam home his fourth Premiership goal this season. Linfield nearly went 2 up before the break after a Kirk Millar corner nearly crept over the line but was swiftly cleared by an alert Curtis Allen.
Allen created a couple of good chances for the Glens in the second half, he headed over from a Ross Redman delivery before sending another effort not too far wide. Marcus Kane sent a shot from 30 yards only for it to go over the goal. Even with a lot a possession Glentoran couldn’t get an equaliser in the end. Linfield’s win gave them another three points which put them just one point behind table leaders Glenavon. The Glens sit fourth on the table just one point behind Crusaders.
Crusaders host Glentoran this Saturday while Linfield host Newry, both games kick off at 3pm.
