Last weekend we witnessed two thrilling games in the World Cup last sixteen, both Uruguay and France advance to quarter finals and play each other this Friday 6th July 2018.
Uruguay added another win to their tally of four consecutive wins in this World Cup, sending Euro 2016 Champions Portugal home and booking their place in the quarter finals. Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani headed them into a very early lead in the seventh minute of the game. Portugal tried everything to penetrate their defence but it took until the fifty seventh minute when an unmarked Pepe headed the equaliser home. Uruguay captain Diego Godin was that intent on blocking Ronaldo at every turn that this error allowed Portugal score unchallenged. This was the first goal Uruguay conceded in the tournament. Uruguay upped the tempo after Pepe’s goal and Cavani delivered another goal which ended Portugal’s World Cup campaign.
France sent twice World Cup winners Argentina home after an exhilarating 4-3 victory on Saturday. Antoine Greizmann opened the scoring in the 13th minute after Marcos Rojo fouled Kylian Mbappe and France were awarded a penalty. Argentina did not a get a break until Angel di Maria scored the equaliser with an impressive long-range shot shortly before half time. Shortly after the break, Argentina went ahead when Gabriel Mercado diverted a Messi shot past Lloris. Ten minutes later, France’s Benjamin Pavard’s replied with a stunning strike to level the score once again. Back on level footing, France took charge with Paris Saint German teenager Kylian Mbappe scoring twice in the space of four minutes in spectacular fashion. Sergio Aguero bagged a consolation goal in the 93rd minute but it wasn’t enough to beat Les Blues.
Uruguay face France this Friday at 3.00pm.
