Glentoran has had a tough season to date which saw Gary Haveron’s sacking a couple of months ago.
Northern Ireland football legend Ronnie McFall stepped into the gap to steer the Glens until the end of the season whilst Oval bosses secure new management. Only last week it was confirmed that talks took place between Dungannon Swifts boss Rodney McAree and the Glen’s, but it was quickly announced on Saturday that McAree was staying put and had signed a new three-year contract with Swifts.
The only other name in pot is ex Glen’s player Colin Nixon. Currently the Ard’s gaffer, he has made no secret of his yearning to return to his former club. He played for the East Belfast club for most of his footballing career from 1995 -2013 and holds the record for most appearances for Glentoran. He is a firm favourite with Glens supporters. It is reported he has held preliminary talks with Oval bosses last week however Ards are so keen to keep him that they have offered a new two-year contract.
Nixon has made great strides at Ards since he took over in 2017 and they will be very reluctant to let him go. Glentoran have gone through four managers in the last three years so the decision for Nicky will not be an easy one to make. He will have his work cut out to whip this club into shape next season and beyond. Only time will tell if Glen’s hero will return home. Watch this space!
