Crusaders played host to Faroe Island team B36 Torshavn last night at Seaview in the first round of qualifying of the Europa League.

The hosts nearly went ahead just seconds into the game when Jordan Owens was fouled by Eli Nielsen but he missed the subsequent penalty awarded. Crusaders dominated possession in the first half which saw B36’s goalkeeper Jørgensen tested repeatedly by a Jordan Forsythe’s header followed by attempts from Jordan Owens, Howard Beverland and then Philip Lowry.

B36 nearly went ahead before the half hour mark when Ami Frederiksberg strike hit the woodwork followed by a free kick from Alex Mellemgaard that just went wide but it was the hosts that broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute when Hegarty headed home at the edge of the six-yard box after connecting with a Billy Joe Burns cross from the right.

Crusaders were not nearly as dangerous in the second-half as they were before the break so didn’t look likely that either side were likely to score. The second goal of the game for the hosts came from a long ball from Burns which Jordan Owen’s neatly chipped onto Lowry who skillfully put it past Jorgensen in the bottom corner in the 79th minute.

Crusaders travel to the Faroe Island’s next week for the return leg with a 2 nill advantage. It won’t be easy for B36 to overturn result from last night’s defeat however. The winner will play Premier League side Wolves in the next round and it’s sure to be the Belfast boys.

Crus boss Stephen Baxter spoke about his team in glowing terms post match saying “The team tonight in its entirety was exceptional. Everybody worked to the game plan. Their tireless running was unbelievable, extraordinary considering they’re only back in a few weeks. You have to take your hat off to them”

We wish Crusaders the very best of luck next week!
