Linfield’s centre forward, Dundalk native Michael O’Connor has been rumoured to be moving to a Scottish club from Danske Bank winners Linfield this Summer.
The 20-year-old has been the subject of interest from many the Scottish Championship side including Scottish Premiership side, Ross County and Championship side Dundee whose assistant manager is Northern Ireland’s coach Jimmy Nicholl.
His departure seems to be imminent given that he has been left out of the squad for Linfield’s Champions League home leg against Rosenborg tomorrow.
O’Connor made his debut for the Republic of Ireland’s U21 last March, after coming up the ranks from the U19 squad. He is well known to Rep of Ireland’s underage boss and ex Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny, as Kenny handed him his debut during their spell together at Dundalk in 2016.
The forward subsequently moved to Shamrock Rovers and had a spell on-loan at Finn Harps before signing for Linfield last year, a transfer which O’Connor feels has given him the chance to prove himself which he certainly has. He made thirty seven appearances for Linfield last season and scored eleven goals.
Last month Linfield chairman Roy McGivern said that the Blues would consider offers for the player, who only has one year left on his two year contract.
“We are aware of interest in Michael from Dundee and other clubs from across the water,” said McGivern. “We wouldn’t want to lose Michael but I know he is an ambitious young player. He has one year left on his contract and if clubs want to make a bid we would have to consider it.”
It remains to be seen which Scottish club with snap up the young forward but watch this space for an announcement.
