Holywood born Rory McIlroy has had a fantastic start in the WGC Dell Matchplay in Austin after winning his first two matches.
The 29 year old claimed an impressive 5&4 victory over Luke List in his first outing, taking the lead on the second hole and maintained his lead over the whole match, sealing the win with birdies on the 13th & 14th.
McIlroy followed up his comfortable opening-day win over List with an impressive 3&2 victory over World Number 47,Justin Harding.
McIlroy took the lead from the very first hole, when he made a birdie four to go one up. He followed that with ten successive halves including a run of three successive birdies on the 4th to 6th before finishing with a beautiful eagle at the par five 12th to go two up. Harding failed to capitalize on back to back bogeys on the 13th and 14th before McIlroy made a birdie on the 16th and his second eagle of the nine to claim victory on the 16th.
McIlroy, who won the title in 201, has failed to get out of the group stage in his last two appearances but his form this week suggests that the tide is turning for him. If he manages to beat Matt Fitzpatrick today he will advance to last sixteen. He spoke to the media yesterday saying; “It’s a nice position to be in compared to the last couple of years, being in control of my own fate a little bit,” said McIlroy. “Just got to go out and play well.
“I’ve been looking forward to the match against Fitz because I’ve become pretty close to him living down in Jupiter and whatever. Go out and play similarly tomorrow, take my chances when I can and hopefully get three wins out of three and move on.”
